There are several different methods of receding gums surgery in Glen Ellyn, IL. Based on the nature and severity of your condition, Dr. John Borello may recommend one of the following treatments:
- Pocket depth reduction
- Tissue regeneration
- Soft tissue graft
- The Pinhole Surgical Technique™
Pocket Depth Reduction
Pocket depth reduction is most effective for mild cases of gum recession. This type of gum surgery involves pulling back a portion of the gum tissue so that the periodontal pockets can become visible. Once access has been gained, Dr. Borello will use special tools to remove plaque and calculus deposits and smooth the root surfaces of the teeth. The goal is to reduce irritants and encourage the tissue to reattach to the tooth’s surface.
Tissue Regeneration
A tissue regeneration procedure is usually performed in combination with a pocket depth reduction. After the plaque and calculus have been cleaned from below the gums, a regenerative material is placed over the area to encourage tissue regrowth. This material can be either graft tissue, membrane, or tissue stimulating protein. The goal is to stimulate regrowth of tissue that has been lost to recession.
Soft Tissue Graft
A soft tissue graft is used for moderate to severe cases of gum recession. During these procedures, a tissue sample is taken from either the roof of the mouth or the gum line itself. Then, it is attached to the area affected by recession in order to bring it to a higher and healthier level. Eventually, the two tissues will fuse together.
The Pinhole Surgical Technique™
This is an innovative, new gum surgery that is minimally invasive and minimally painful. Instead of cutting tissue samples and stitching them to the gum line, the Pinhole Surgical Technique™ uses special tools to gently loosen the tissue. After the gum tissue has been loosened, Dr. Borello will slowly stretch it over the tooth until it reaches the natural position. Collagen strips are then used to hold it in place while the healing process occurs.
